McKinnon House is a contemporary family residence that draws on the language of art deco while remaining firmly grounded in modern life. Designed for a young family, the interiors were shaped with equal attention to practicality and atmosphere, ensuring the house feels both refined and welcoming.
Spread across 58 squares, the program is generous — four bedrooms, a media room, study, rumpus, a four-car garage, and spaces for entertaining, including a pool and alfresco. Yet despite its scale, the home unfolds with a sense of ease, each room connected through a considered sequence of spaces that encourages both gathering and retreat.
The design takes inspiration from art deco geometry but translates it in a subtle, contemporary manner. A palette of natural stone, soft colours and warm textures forms the foundation, creating interiors that feel timeless rather than tied to a specific moment. Natural light was a defining priority, with skylights and carefully positioned openings introducing daylight deep into the plan, shifting the mood throughout the day and softening the home’s larger volumes.
At the centre of the house, a curved staircase acts as both a functional connector and a sculptural gesture. Its sweeping form introduces movement and grace, becoming a quiet focal point of daily life. Complementing this, a recurring chamfered detail weaves its way through wall panelling, cabinetry, and the kitchen island. This repetition, subtle in its expression, provides continuity and a rhythm that binds the interiors together.
Our practice was engaged to provide full interior design services, with a focus on how materiality and detail could elevate the family’s everyday experience. Close collaboration with Anthony Larne Constructions was integral to the project, ensuring ideas translated seamlessly from design intent to built form.
McKinnon House is ultimately defined by balance — between elegance and comfort, statement and subtlety, scale and intimacy. It is a home designed to adapt and grow with its family, offering spaces that are generous in spirit yet grounded in warmth.
