Meet Fresh Darling Square

Located in the vibrant heart of Sydney’s Darling Square, the project reimagines dessert retail as a bold, artistic experience. The design moves beyond conventional fit-out thinking — transforming a humble bowl of dessert into an immersive palette of colour, texture, and form.

The project occupies two adjoining ground-floor tenancies, providing an expansive frontage and a rare opportunity to engage with the public realm.

Drawing from the deconstructed ingredients of a traditional Taiwanese dessert, the design interprets each as a visual and material cue. In collaboration with Dulux, a vibrant scheme of maroon, ocean blue, and gold was developed to reflect this narrative. These tones are further elevated by high-gloss finishes in steel, tile, and paintwork, adding contrast, sheen, and a layered sense of depth.

Timber joinery in soft, fluid forms brings warmth and tactility, subtly referencing the roundness and rhythm of the dessert itself. Throughout the space, curves and colour operate in harmony — creating balance and cohesion while challenging the often-muted palette of the surrounding retail landscape.

Unlike many contemporary interiors, this project embraces richness and saturation with restraint and clarity. Colour is not simply decorative, but conceptual — used purposefully to evoke curiosity, emotion, and place. The result is a store that feels vibrant yet composed, sculptural yet grounded.

Meet Fresh Darling Square stands as a reminder that small-scale retail can carry cultural and architectural significance. It proves that even a bowl of dessert — when reinterpreted through design — can become a meaningful narrative. By translating food into form, texture into identity, and material into memory, the space offers a fresh, energetic take on hospitality design in the heart of Sydney.
