Nestled in the culturally rich suburb of Eastwood, NSW, the project explores the idea of ‘East Meets West’ through spatial storytelling — blending contemporary hospitality design with material warmth and subtle cultural references transforming a vacant tenancy with generous proportions into a layered, immersive experience rooted in community and connection.
Each Meet Fresh store is uniquely designed. In this instance, the design brief was shaped by the local demographic — a multicultural enclave where tradition and modernity intersect. The spatial concept embraces this duality, drawing inspiration from both Eastern and Western sensibilities to create a setting that feels open, welcoming, and quietly poetic.
The tenancy’s ample volume is treated not as a challenge but as an opportunity. The verticality of the space is expressed through a top-and-bottom zoning approach: grounded, tactile materials at the lower level are complemented by an overhead floral installation — a sculptural canopy of trailing Verbena. When softly lit, the flowers cast shifting shadows across rattan weaves and oak paneling, evoking a dreamlike rhythm that animates the space.
Materiality plays a vital role. Locally sourced finishes such as terracotta, terrazzo tile, rattan, oak, and muted Venetian plaster are paired with copper trims and soft landscape elements to establish warmth and texture. These materials feel both nostalgic and contemporary — referencing the familiar while elevating the everyday.
A series of solid oak bench seats with drum-like bases and copper detailing define the central dining zone, offering a refined take on traditional banquet seating. Perforated screens and recessed lighting carve out intimate pockets for conversation, giving the space a sense of rhythm and variation throughout.
Importantly, the design resists overt theming. Instead, it seeks to create room for interpretation — a platform for cultural exchange rather than a singular narrative. By weaving together subtle gestures, handcrafted details, and a respect for locality, the space becomes more than a venue — it becomes a quiet celebration of Australia’s evolving hospitality identity.
Meet Fresh Eastwood reflects the brand’s mission of uniting cultures through food. Here, that mission is extended into architecture and interior design — crafting a small yet impactful space where a simple bowl of dessert becomes a shared experience of warmth, story, and belonging.
