Joli is a dessert destination designed to capture the essence of joy, nostalgia, and tropical indulgence. Drawing inspiration from its signature coconut-based treats, the fit-out translates flavour into form—offering patrons not just dessert, but a sensory escape.
Located in the heart of Hawthorn, the project was designed to maximize both counter visibility and front-of-house seating. The result is a fluid, welcoming space that feels expansive despite its modest footprint.
Joli’s design language is grounded in its brand ethos: a sweet escape. A playful palette of beach blue and creamy whites evokes memories of soft sand and tropical skies, while pigmented terrazzo floors and polished plaster walls lend texture and tactility. Gentle curves in the ceiling, joinery and thresholds echo the roundness of coconut shells, fruit slices, and the joyful forms of childhood.
At the shopfront, existing green tiles are retained as a nod to the site’s heritage context. Inside, light tubes cast soft patterns that mimic waves across sand—guiding the eye to the product display. In collaboration with the brand team, a feature wall of graphic stamp-style illustrations tells Joli’s story across a rustic white brick canvas, blending art and atmosphere.
A floating bench framed by fluted warm lighting and a curved feature wall creates an ‘Instagram moment’—a playful gesture that encourages interaction and sharing. These subtle elements, paired with a calm yet curious spatial rhythm, invite patrons to linger.
Rather than relying on grand features, the design finds power in precision. Every detail—every finish, form, and flourish—has been chosen to express lightness, sweetness, and joy. Joli proves that when executed with care, even the smallest details can make a lasting impression.
