Top Tea Elizabeth Street is a sensory experience designed to heighten the everyday ritual of tea drinking. Located on busy Elizabeth Street in Melbourne’s CBD, the project transforms a narrow tenancy into a calm, engaging space that interacts with the five human senses — offering a moment of pause within the urban rush.
The design extends beyond the typical idea of retail, creating a small-scale sensory garden that connects sight, sound, smell, touch, and taste. At street level, cascading bench seating spills into the footpath, drawing in passers-by while maintaining a sense of flow between inside and out. This welcoming gesture is paired with the scent of freshly brewed tea, subtly drawn from the back-of-house and vented toward the entry to invite curiosity.
Mirrors play a key role in reframing the spatial experience. Full-height reflective surfaces visually double the space, while custom furniture and planting are designed to extend beyond the physical edges — giving the illusion of a garden that continues beyond the walls. This mirrored strategy also captures the changing street activity, lending a dynamic quality to the interior throughout the day.
A layered material palette of raw concrete, textured paint, stainless steel, and planting creates tactile richness, inviting touch and interaction. Zig-zag bench seating encourages gathering, while soft music and projected visuals contribute to a calming, immersive atmosphere.
The result is a compact but richly orchestrated interior — one that balances polished minimalism with natural elements, and sensory engagement with urban life. Top Tea – Senses Garden reimagines what a small hospitality space can offer: a place of connection, curiosity, and calm — designed to leave a lasting impression on the senses.
