Inspired by the distinct and lasting impression of its beverages, Top Tea Clayton translates the sensory experience of taste into a bold, architectural language. Drawing from the “Tetris effect,” the design reimagines the tea shop as a modular, multi-zoned interior — where each element plays a part in an immersive, carefully orchestrated whole.
Located on Clayton Road, the long, narrow tenancy (21 meters by 5 meters) is organized into three distinct square zones: a welcoming tasting area at the front, an open mixology station at the center, and the back-of-house services to the rear. This modular grid layout brings clarity to the space while introducing rhythm and interaction throughout the customer journey.
The design challenges traditional fit-out approaches, using unconventional materials and tactile features to create an unexpected and engaging environment. Stainless-steel tactile studs are repurposed to form playful mascot graphics and signage, offering both visual intrigue and a surprising textural experience. Uplifting braille messages are engraved into the steel seating, acting as hidden Easter eggs that enrich the sensory landscape.
A crisp palette of white polished plaster, square tiling, stainless steel, and gridded skylights defines the interior — bright, reflective, and spatially dynamic. Externally, the shopfront continues this bold expression with steel seating elements and soft landscaping that blur the threshold between footpath and shop, creating a strong visual presence on the street.
Top Tea Clayton demonstrates how even a compact food hospitality space can become a canvas for spatial storytelling — one that goes beyond function to offer a layered, memorable experience. The result is a space that speaks to the brand’s passion not just for drinks, but for craft, curiosity, and design that connects.
